Increasingly more people are turning into meditation as part of self-care, and surprisingly as part of the skincare routine. Of course, regular meditation provides immense benefit for the body that will also affect the skin in a good way. Read on to know more how incorporating meditation can be your best choice for improving your well-being as well as your skin.
Let’s start with the basic, your skin is a great communicator and a reflection to show you what’s really going on underneath, within our body.
Anything that’s happening – either good or bad – will show up on your skin, manifesting as either healthy, supple, and glowing skin, or a skin that’s oily and full of acne breakouts. And for the latter to occur, it means that your body and mind combined are in a stressful state, that a good dose of meditation can help put your body on track.
How Stress Affects Your Skin
No matter how much we want to ignore it despite living in such a stressful lifestyle, stress itself plays a huge factor in our well-being, and the effect later transpires on the skin.
Living in the stressful state for so long (known as chronic stress) will cause your skin to age prematurely, producing frequent acne breakouts, as well as making your skin look simply dull.
At the first sign of stress, your body produces a hormone known as cortisol that will block the healthy blood circulation (that carries an ample amount of oxygen), including the ones meant for the skin.
This, in turn, causes your skin to starve of nutrients it needs to work perfectly, while the affected area continuously produces waste and toxins that need to be purged out from the body. As a result, your skin becomes dull and dehydrated while accumulated waste that is still trapped will cause the upper layer to produce extra oil, and causes – you guessed it – acne, redness and even pigmentation!
That’s where meditation can be the solution for the stress you’re having; emerging research shows a correlation between the mind and the skin, and anything that makes the mind feel good, it will show up on your skin as well.
How Meditation Benefits The Skin
Done correctly, meditation can significantly reduce any negative emotions that you’re having, and you’re better equipped to manage it as soon as it comes again. Fear, anxiety, depression, and stress, these are the negative emotions that affect your body adversely and it affects your skin as well.
And for some people, it’s not just merely a dull, flaky skin – skin issues such as vitiligo, eczema, and psoriasis also affected by stress. A study done by the University of Sheffield shows a promising result of how meditation can benefit people suffering the issue, such as the intensity and the frequency of the skin disease dropped significantly.
Regular meditation can certainly make your skin stronger and delay aging signs effectively than just relying on skin care products alone.
During the session, new energy is brought into your body to create a relax and calm feeling, this new energy stimulates your body’s healing mechanism to repair and heal inflammation, as well as increasing oxygen in the blood circulation, giving your skin a youthful glow.
Meditating should not be difficult – although the hardest part probably to observe your never ending thoughts, acknowledge them and let them be, rather than engaging with them. There and then! Remaining calm and relax the body is the aim, not fighting your thoughts or thinking about your to-do list. This is the only way the body can switch from constant ‘ON’ MODE (sympathetic nervous system) to the rest and relax mode of parasympathetic mode as possible. I know it’s not easy when you’re starting but rest assured, as you get the hang of it, you will love it!!! and so will your skin as it will glow with inner peace and new energy. And if you don’t believe me, look up the scientific research for this, It’s proven by science!
